A closer look at this year’s fashion trends

A few weeks into the new year and already some outrageous fashion trends are appearing on the pages of fashion magazines and in the headlines.

The funniest headline I saw topped the fashion section of UK’s The Telegraph. It reads, “Bonnets are no longer just for period dramas–here’s how to wear one in 2026”.

Regardless of what The Telegraph says, one color dressing or mood-boosting activewear are not the hottest trends. And while trends this year may not actually include bonnets (I’m certainly not wearing one), I do agree with one thing on the fashion pages in the UK: looking authentic is definitely in.

Whether it’s the no-makeup look inspired by A-listers baring it all (I’m not a fan) or full exposure see-through clothing (definitely, not a fan), following your own style is the most appealing way to dress.

So what’s in this year? Fabrics like metallics, mesh and chiffon are everywhere. And to a certain extent, graphic prints and bold colors, are still trending. Unfortunately, excessively wide leg pants and barrel jeans; yes, still in (why not just wear bedsheets, one for each leg).

Asymettrical hemlines on tops, fitted corset tops, texture, silks and satins, neutrals such as grey, beige and greige (a blend of grey and beige popularized by Giorgio Armani), harem pants, jackets with mandarin collars, Napoleon jackets, plaid, polka dots and color block clash: all in for 2026.

Deconstructed and distressed: also in.  The trench and new takes on suiting are trending as is the scarf coat. Finally, blue is back from capri to sapphire.

Tote bags will finally replace micro bags this year (not a moment too soon). For bags, top handles are trending.

A curtain call for cut outs in dresses (for good, hopefully), bourgeois dressing, asymmetrical off-the- shoulder, mini dresses and the color, burgundy. Boho is fading slowly and cigarette jeans are just about burned out.

As you explore this year’s latest, remember to introduce trends into your wardrobe carefully and prudently. Go too far and you’re wearing a costume instead of just being fashionable. A little goes a long way.

Of course, timeless elegance is never out of style. And your authentic style tops all else.
