So much has been written about Parisian-style: simple yet elegant dressing from a capsule wardrobe of upscale basics. Want the look: a tailored silhouette, a palette of neutrals accessorized with gold?
If looking natural and fashionable, without much fuss, is your desired style, then a closer look at what Parisian women wear is a chic way to build a versatile wardrobe that goes from day to night effortlessly.
Timeless, versatile clothing is where I’d start. This look comes down to the details. Let’s explore a few guidelines for dressing: “Parisian-style.”
Develop your wardrobe around neutrals so your clothes mix and match without much effort. Of note: pastels can be neutrals and so can denim or leather. Consider the trench coat: a French staple for French women. Try an updated trench: longer or shorter in a soft pastel for spring.
Don’t forget a white crew neck t-shirt to wear as a layer underneath a sweater or jacket. Want to look like a city girl? Try cool colors like greys, blues, even silver. For wardrobe staples, I prefer navy blue to black: less harsh against the skin. A monochromatic two-piece ensemble for urban dressing, day or night is oh, so French.
Parisian women like to introduce pattern with polka dots or French blue stripes in an otherwise solid wardrobe. Then, of course there’s the bag. A leather bucket bag is a good place to splurge because a bag goes with you everywhere. Boots are next: ankle length, mid-calf or tall in black, warm brown or soft grey. A little gold jewelry: maybe a bangle, simple earrings or necklace; another splurge.
When talking wardrobe staples: shop for a gorgeous leather belt. Remember, we are building a universal wardrobe with upscale basics. Straight leg pants in blue, black or a variety of neutrals come next.
Don't forget a midi skirt and a pencil skirt in navy blue, grey or black. One neutral bulky open weave sweater and a white or off white blouse to match anything and a jacket that will go from day to night. One black dress, mini or midi: another basic that’s goes from the office to evening. Strappy shoes or sandals, pointed toe kitten heels and a silk scarf and you have the ingredients for Parisian-style dressing.
Expect an upfront investment of classics that can be worn for years by adding a few updates each season.
What to wear should never be a question again. This style of dressing may not be for every woman but if you want to look put together without standing in your closet looking aimlessly at what’s hanging there, then Parisian-style spells fashion freedom.
